Proverbs 15 - Advice On How To Deal With Angry People

Proverbs 15
Well today is January 15. So today I’ve been reading in Proverbs 15. This chapter is full of great advice for life. It is one of the things I like about Proverbs. The entire Bible is filled with instructions on how we should live our lives but Proverbs has so many little nuggets of advice in each chapter. I could probably write 20 articles on the advice given in just one chapter of Proverbs. I believe the hardest thing is to pick just one point to write about.

Today I’d like to write about advice that we find in the very first verse of this chapter. I picked this particular subject because I know that many of you are probably reading this from my business site and this verse deals with how to deal with angry people. In this type business you could realistically say that people are our business. If you haven’t had to deal with someone who is angry, hold on, eventually you will. It’s not necessarily that they are upset at you. Maybe they had a bad morning at home, or a bad day at work. This advice from Proverbs 15 tells you how to handle it.

Proverbs 15:1
"A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger."

This is great advice. I have actually used this in the past when I worked at a newspaper where my job was to take calls where people called in to complain. I didn’t necessarily agree with them on everything but I didn’t let myself get caught up in their anger either. By listening to them and then replying in a soft tone, I found that it really calmed them down, and although they might not have gotten what they were calling for, I didn’t have any hang up angry.

If you let yourself get caught up in their anger you find that the anger of you both just feeds off one another. The bible even tells about that in verse 18.

Proverbs 15:18
"A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife."

So when dealing with an angry person, whether in your private life or in business, remember to be slow to anger and give a soft answer. As a Christian, you should desire the reputation of being a peacemaker. Jesus even says in Matthew 5:9 “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.”
