Could Bible Prophecy Have Been Written After The Fact?
Ezekiel 26:4-6 "And they shall destroy the walls of Tyrus, and break down her towers: I will also scrape her dust from her, and make her like the top of a rock. It shall be a place for the spreading of nets in the midst of the sea: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD: and it shall become a spoil to the nations. And her daughters which are in the field shall be slain by the sword; and they shall know that I am the LORD."
You know there have been people in the past who have asked me, how do you know that the bible is in fact true and not all the other so called holy books? Well there are actually several different reasons but one of the biggest things that sets the Bible apart from any other "holy book" is it's prophecies.
Now I know that other books have prophecies in them but first of all most of them have not come to pass and even the ones that are claimed to have, are so vague that they could be applied to any number of things in history.
The bible is the only book that every prophesy, other than the ones having to do with the end times, has been fulfilled. Also these prophesies are not vague. If you look in Psalms 22 you find a detailed description of the crucifixion right down to the words that Jesus uttered, the casting of lots on his vesture, and a medical description of the effect of crucifixion on the body. When it was written crucifixion would not be invented for a few hundred years to come.
There are detailed prophesies all through the old testament that you can read and then check out history and see where it happened just like it was written. There are those who will try to claim that someone else wrote them after the fact and just gave credit to the prophet. This is why I like this particular prophesy.
Let's look at what Ezekiel says will happen to Tyrus. First of all the city will be destroyed. Then nobody will escape, the ground will be swept clean, and all the stones and timber will be cast into the sea, not one stone will remain standing. We know this because he says "I will also scrape her dust from her, and make her like the top of a rock." It also says in verse 12 "and they shall lay thy stones and thy timber and thy dust in the midst of the water." We also see that God says that the city would never be rebuilt after this and the site would be used to spread fishing nets from then on.
Now some might want to claim this was written after the fact but it would not make any sense to write this if that was the case. Soon after Ezekiel wrote this Tyrus did fall to the Babylonians but many of the people escaped to an island across the way and rebuilt Tyrus stronger than ever. The ruins still stood where the old city had stood, in short if you were to write this after the fact you would have written it a bit differently.
The interesting thing is that about a hundred years later, a man came through conquering everybody in the area. His name was Alexander the Great. You might have heard of him. When he got to the city of Tyrus they kind of thumbed their noses at him because being built on a island there just was no good way to attack their new city. Alexander the Great had his army gather the stones from the old city and cast them into the sea to build a bridge over to the new city. They then marched across killed every single person, tore down the new city and cast all the stones there into the sea as well. To this day Tyrus has never been rebuilt, and if you visit the site of the city, to this day it is being used to spread fishing nets.
This is just one example of the kind of detail you find in the prophesies of the bible. But as I said before this is one example of where it was fulfilled in such a way that if it had been written after Ezekiel's death about the falling of Tyrus it would have been written differently, as a matter of fact I'm sure that people who were aware of Ezekiel's prophecy probably thought he had missed the mark in some of the details but in reality it all came to pass just like God said it would.
